Here’s What You Can Learn From The 3 Dumb Mistakes I Wish I Hadn’t Made At The Start

I wasted a $100 Adwords voucher in 2 hours on a stupid campaign thinking everyone would buy my stuff.

My blood pressure went up ten fold because of it.

It’s these simple lessons I wish I had known, because I would have had less stress, and achieved some of my goals sooner.

So, if you get anything out of this article, please don’t repeat them.

Yes, failures and mistakes (which I have many) are part and parcel of building a business.

It’s bloody frustrating. But, if you choose to skip the mistakes I made, I’m sure you’ll lessen the frustrations and frictions faced by many solopreneurs.

Because, it’ll help you move a step or two closer.

Here are the 3 mistakes I made. Try NOT to follow them, only if you want to end the struggle of building a home business online.

  1. Not keeping an eye on the measurable numbers.
  2. Relying on platforms that don’t care a cent about you, but your money.
  3. Thinking everyone is your best prospect. This is a total time waster for your business. Instead, you need to focus on this one thing.

With that said, I’m going to expand a bit more on each mistake, and why looking back it made me cringe at the thought of them.

The Numbers Do Tell.

I dropped the ball on this one early. And I shouldn’t have.

Because I was lazy and did not pay a close enough attention to what the numbers were telling me.

Instead, I chose to go about it the wrong way, and naively continued to post content that didn’t stick.

Thinking back, it makes me cringe how dumb it was.

The smarter way – I should have paid closer attention to Facebook Page Insights, Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) and Google Analytics, so I can see what was working, what was not and just replicated the ones that worked.

Like for example, paying attention to the kind of posts that were resonating most with my audience (views, engagements and reach).

Then, I should’ve reposted it, repurposed it and even expanded on the topic as a blog post.

Like for another example, paying attention to my email subject lines, saw what was working and followed the formula.

Since then, I’ve been watching the numbers a bit more closely, and working on the ones that worked best for me.

So far, so good.

Followers Mean Nothing.

I’ve had my Facebook profile shut because some prick decided to hack my account. Few months later, I have had no reply from Facebook.

Fortunately, I had given a trusted source (my wife) admin access to my business page.

Which leads me to this …

Social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and so on are fantastic for driving traffic.

But if you choose not to build an email list, then you’re reliant on platforms to dictate your reach, and even limit your reach because all they want from you is your ad spend.

It’s obvious, if you want platforms to give you more reach, you’ll have to ‘spend to play‘.

Worse still, what if a platform you’ve been reliant on so heavily shuts down for even a day, because one of their engineers inadvertently pushed the wrong button on the keyboard.

Even worse, what if the platform goes bankrupt.

All your followers mean nothing.

But if you can turn followers into email subscribers, your business continues to tick along.

You’re still able to deliver useful content, updates and keep your brand in-front of the readers.

It’s just a solid way to build an audience online by bulldozing the wall between you and the audience, building trust and then turning them into paid customers.

Better still, no platform can take away your email list, because it belongs to you.

A huge asset.

Look Dumb Chasing Everyone.

When I started, I was told that the more NOs I got, the closer I was to a Yes.

And I did just that. I chased.

I would chase small businesses about helping them out with paid advertising.

You know what, the awkward cold market prospecting was hell.

Seriously, the number of times I would walk to the front door of every business, and then suddenly deciding not to was too many.

In order not to look dumb, I’d pretend to pick up a fake call just to walk away.

Stupid.

And I’ve also burnt through my warm market trying to build a downline.

All this chasing was doing my head in.

As you can tell, I suck at chasing … and asking.

Listen:

No matter what any expert tells you, not everyone is your prospect.

NOT everyone has a need for your stuff.

Can you imagine selling a top notch Wagyu beef to a vegetarian?

Or.

Can you imagine selling a weight loss product to someone who eats and trains like an athlete, 24/7?

You can’t.

It’s rejection hell.

So, stop the chase.

Instead, figure out your ‘target market‘. A group of your ideal type of customers, that actually needs your product, service or opportunity.

To do that, you have to figure out their needs, their problems and their desires.

And when I paid closer attention to those factors, I was able to post and email content that’s useful (not spam) to help them as best I could.

Once you do this, you’ll be able to passively attract the best prospects online to your business.

Because, you have what they want.

But, it does take time to build an audience, and build the trust.

You just need to focus on helping your people out and just show up by giving great content, consistently.

If you want a quicker way (and have the budget) to build an audience, then paid advertising is the obvious option.

Just make sure you stick with it long term, measure your ad spend, and drive the paid traffic onto your email list.

Final Thought on The Mistakes …

If only I knew then … I would have invested my time and money on areas that would have been more productive.

So, do yourself a big favor, if you want to stress less do not follow the same mistakes I made.

Focus on the areas that really matter.

Like focusing on helping people out with great content, consistently.

As well, keep any eye on the measurable numbers, keep track of it, and scale the business with ones that works.

And lastly, don’t rely on the algorithms solely for the vanity stuff.

Instead, take advantage of the platforms by driving the best prospects off it to grow an email list, and build the relationship based on trust and value (and then, promote your stuff).

That’s it, the 3 dumb mistakes that I want you to not follow, but use it to scale your business sooner. You’ll be happy when you do.

Starting an online business from home is not going to be a smooth walk in the park.  

I’m not going to sugar coat this. It won’t be easy.

There’s so much content (some crap ones) being shoved into your throat, it will leave you feeling drained, lost and overwhelmed.

It’s like having ten Big Macs with fries for breakfast. But, you’ll be puking after.

Such information overload is not uncommon. I got trapped by it. What I thought would help me, didn’t.

And another thing about starting a home business, it will take time to lay the groundwork. There’s going to be the mistakes, the changes and so on.

But it’s part of the process. I wish I could offer a short-cut. But there isn’t any. And you’d be silly to think there is one.

What’s more, you won’t be earning money straight away … and for some time. Unless, you’re one of a small handful of the ‘very special ones’.

That’s just the reality of running any business. From a brick and mortar business, mom and pop business, digital business and to network marketing, it takes TIME!

A good example, but on a different scale of business. Did you know it took Amazon like 6 years to make a tiny bit of profit, like 1 cent per share from a $1 billion dollar revenue?

I bet there was plenty of blood, sweat and tears poured into laying the groundwork from its beginnings to it’s first profit and to where the company is now!

On a really smaller scale, like my business. It did take time too.

As a home based business, a dadpreneur juggling between 2 kids and work, it wasn’t easy.

But I got the hang of it.

All it took was – some prioritizing, a stubborn commitment, more hard work and sensible time management.

I’m big on building an email list because it allows me to help my readers as best I can.

And it’s the list that gives you control of your business.

It’s invaluable, which makes it a long term sustainable business!

The reason being …

You’re not reliant on platforms that can limit your reach, potentially shutting down your account or even go bankrupt.

Plus …

The prospects that have signed up to your email list are the very best kinds.

And when you have a communication system that allows you to stay in front of a list of audience, you stand a far better chance of closing more prospects than not having one.

And yes, it does take time to come up with good consistent content.

But if you continually work at providing good content to your list, the effort will be worth it.

What’s more, with a reliable autoresponder you’ll be able to set up an automated prospecting system that does all the heavy lifting while you sleep!

So how do you build an email list?

Choose a social platform like a Facebook business page.

Create content and marketing (paid and organic) to an ultra specific and highly responsive audience.

2. Get real with the prospects

And …

Rather than closing and enrolling, and leaving the customer and team member to their own devices … guide them.

For a home business to succeed, you will have to guide them through the stages of setting up a business online.

From social marketing, blog marketing, growing an email list to that stage of closing a customer and team mate.

In other words … map out the path for them and help them set their business on the right path.

Be the support. Be the cheerleader.

And you will build more respect and trust with your audience.

Setting the expectations clearly at the outset will keep the number of people quitting the business less.

3. Your goal is to help

Your prospect is someone who is looking for help. So help them reach their goals.

Their goals come first. Not yours.

Simply by helping them reach it, you are succeeding in many ways.

And the long term results will be worth it.

To help them…

Listen.

Learn what keeps them up at night.

Learn what are their dreams and desires.

Be the pillar of support … and lead the way.

Offer your customers a long-term relationship, then do everything possible to build and maintain it. – Brian Tracy

Be there for them and care. Be the leader.

4. Grow your audience

Whether it is passive or active marketing … or both, get out there, grow your audience and connect.

I don’t mean spending hours on spamming or private messaging strangers on social media.    

I mean, know where your audience hangs out and start connecting by sharing good content, and by showing interest in their problems.

Join forums, Facebook groups, other social platforms and comment on blogs.

Be sincere and start connecting.

If it is through paid ads, then you want to craft the right message and the right offer (like a lead magnet) to a specific audience, so you can attract the best prospects to your email list, which then allows you to follow up.

This is when understanding the pain points of your niche helps greatly. 

And when possible, get on the phone and talk.

Using the phone creates an opportunity for two people to get to know each other more, build a relationship and bring in more sales or team mates.

It is a nice skillset to have.

This is a great way to learn, expand your skill sets, and build relationships in the process.

In closing …

Starting an online home business is not easy. It takes time to lay the fundamentals of the business right.

And it does take time for money to come in.

You’d be naive to think only 4 hours of effort a week will cut it. It won’t.

You see …

It’s a matter of putting in the time to continually learn, and take on the challenges that are ahead.

It’s a pain in the you know what …

But if you’re prepared to put in the effort and time, and consistently tweak the processes and apply the right actions, you can get there.

As Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon correctly puts it :-

“We are stubborn on vision. We are flexible on detail …”

Finally, in any business, if you take the focus ‘off you’ and instead, put your effort into servicing your people, the value you put in will build that TRUST in your personal brand.

The experience of just calling up businesses was not fun. It was nerve wrecking. And the rejections didn’t help.

I wish I knew before I started chasing, it would lead to a lot of stress.

  5. Build out your website content.

The Priority

My priority then and now, is to build my personal brand by sharing the knowledge and experience I have learnt and help people along their own path. Always.

You see … I want to be that person everyone can count on. Hopefully, I will be for you.

My own blog is the perfect springboard for building authority and credibility in the reader’s mind.

Plus the fun in building your website (if you choose to), is to learn something new and teach other people …

  • Use the best plugins
  • Designing graphics
  • Social media marketing
  • Content management
  • Website hosting
  • Email marketing
  • Best website practices

It just builds your personal development, confidence, and knowledge.

You see, just by researching, going through other trainings, you can share and inform people simply by writing. Delivering content of value.

Which also, gives you the inside-out knowledge to apply in other areas of the business.

Having your own blog gives you that presence and a voice.

Even if you are brand new and have no runs on the board, your readers will look to you as someone who is credible. Someone who consistently provides value through your own blog.

Although you are not ‘tooting’ your own credibility, your readers will take you seriously.

Seriously, it’s a far better option than cold calling people or having that home party.

So if you want to build a presence online (and with social), then you just have to simply start building your own blog now.

Put in the effort to post content (text, video, or podcast), and invite others to follow your journey.

And as long as you provide value to your readers, showcase what you stand for, you can build trust and passively generate leads to your business.

But …

“But Jason, what about YouTube, Facebook or LinkedIn?”

You can … but I wouldn’t recommend  it.

You see with your own blog you have total control, you own your own domain name, you own your design and no one can shut you down or take it away from you.

With Facebook or YouTube, you have to follow their rules and you are limited to what you can do with it. So you have no control or whatever say in it.

Plus, your account can be easily be shut down, and you will lose all your great content.

Your blog is your business!  No one else’s.

You just have to look back at the issues surrounding Tik Tok in mid 2020.

President Trump had threatened to close off Tik Tok’s access to the US market. You can imagine the panic the users of Tik Tok were going through!

I experienced it with Squidoo 7 years ago when my account was shut down and all my content was lost. I lost big time with my online sales.

And now Squidoo has disappeared. It was a great lesson.

So don’t put in all your effort and content on any site you have no control over.

When I post any informative content on Facebook, I’ll direct prospects straight to my blog.

And when you use social media like Facebook to direct traffic to your blog, your website will do the grunt work … and work 24/7 for you, everyday!

Can you see now the advantages of starting your own blog over other social media sites?

If your brand is coupled with a robust website with any social media marketing, you can easily drive people to your blog, who are reaching out to you wanting more information about your business, product or service, and you will have people signing up to your email system or buying products.

Now, that’s SWEET.

Look, Facebook, Youtube and other Social Media sites are fantastic, but it should be used as a tool to drive visitors to your blog.

Your own blog is the most effective tool that you have total control over, and it is the platform for launching your personal brand, business opportunity, product and service.

Better yet, it is a far better option then hounding your friends and relatives, arranging home parties, hotel meetings just to find the people who will take the time to listen and have an inkling of interest about your product, service or business.

That’s not what this is all about.

The cool thing is, nobody else can brand you.

Nobody can. Only you. And that’s what makes you so unique.

Branding you is what makes you stick out from the crowd. You are going to stand out for being you.

It Builds Trust

If people don’t know you, like you or even trust you, they will not have any interest.

But with a strong personal brand that focuses on providing value, people will  trust you more. Let’s face it, people do not join companies or join business opportunities, they join you because they trust and like you as a person.

People will buy from you, and not from the company.

So Where Do I start?

Everyone, including me and you have to start somewhere.

You just have to think of two solid personal brands like Oprah and Ellen.

Both ladies started as a nobody, but by creating a brand that continually offers value to their audience, you can see where they are at today.

With your own personal brand, you don’t have to be an expert, you don’t have to be making huge amounts of money right now … it is about focusing on how to fix the problems and struggles of your prospect – your target audience.

So start by nailing down your target audience, help them out by delivering value (social content marketing, video marketing, blogging, email marketing … whichever that suits you), keep on delivering good content, guide them in the right direction and point them to useful resources that will make you money.

If your personal brand is seen as someone who is trustworthy, reliable and can help people solve their problems and reach their goals, you will attract a following that will grow your business fast even if you are new.

So get cracking, find ‘your why’ you want to get on this journey and focus on providing value for your target audience.

Seriously this will require a lot effort and determination. It will not come easy!
